Top 4 Reasons Why I Chose to Study in New Zealand

Speaking from my own experience, researching study overseas options can be a stressful task. There are plenty of things to think about, including what course to study and which university to attend. An equally vital decision and one not everyone realises is even an option, is whether to travel abroad or stay in your country to study.

I decided to study in New Zealand, and that is why I have been studying my master’s in business management in this beautiful country.  While choosing my study abroad destination, the popular choices I encountered were Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the US and Europe, all of which were exciting for different reasons. Nevertheless, I found that New Zealand was a perfect fit for an adventurous individual like me, and since my arrival, I have never looked back!

In case you feel like joining me, here are some compelling reasons to study in the “Land of the Long White Cloud”.

Studying in Middle Earth

I have been a big fan of The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings trilogies, both of which were shot in New Zealand, and when I watched these movies for the first time, I said to myself: “I have got to go there one day”.

It is surreal to be here now, and it’s as beautiful as these two films made it look. If you are as enthusiastic as me and looking forward to visit the country where Frodo started his journey, then New Zealand should be on your list of potential study destinations. When you are in New Zealand, visiting Hobbiton is a must!

Meet Welcoming People

Before I packed my belongings in Singapore, I read that Kiwis tend to be friendly towards overseas students, but wasn’t sure what to expect. Four months later, I can say that I have met the kindest and most approachable people in the country. New Zealanders are always willing to lend you a helping hand, and I have honestly felt home since the day one.

Receive High-Quality Education

Like many Singaporeans, New Zealand was not my initial choice destination. But, after some research, I found out the country not only has one of the best education systems but also home to several world-class universities. It quite resembles education in Australia!

In my case, studying business management at the University of Waikato will undoubtedly be an advantage on my CV, as the Waikato has triple Accreditation.

The faculty here also helps you develop your practical and critical-thinking skills, as they promote you to engage in debates, participate in class, and seek your answers by looking at different perspectives. Having been here for four months, I am already thinking differently about my studies.

Experience New Things

Something that I did not predict before coming here was how many minor differences there would be to live here. For instance, when I arrived here, I was wondering to see that people drive on the left-hand side of the road. It was quite familiar with the same British driving system is followed in Singapore as well.

Daylight lasts longer here during the summer, due to daylight saving time. The change I noticed the most on a daily basis though is how many people in New Zealand like tea when I am used to most people back home preferring coffee. It has been fantastic getting to know the cultural differences between New Zealanders and us, and you can expect the same experience if you chose to study overseas too.
